Recycling Filing Cabinets Into Beautiful DIY Flower Boxes

DIY Flower Boxes from Filing Cabinets

This is an awesome hack that turns filing cabinet into flower boxes! Since it is almost fall I wanted to create an outdoor space where my family can hangout and enjoy the outdoors together. We are just starting this renovation on our house and we decided to tackle the exterior of our outdoor shed/garage.  Also, I wanted a spot to relax and enjoy being outside, and since I love the flowers, I wanted to make those big planter boxes.

Since big planter boxes are too expensive, I wanted to find an inexpensive way to achieve the same result and look that big planter boxes provide. So,  in this post, Ill be showing you how to do the same!  I found a more affordable way to achieve the same look of big planter boxes and it would be re purposing old file cabinets. This is a very simple step-by-step tutorial on how I did that. In total, I spent less that $60 on three huge flower boxes. I know you can do this!

Supplies

Step 1

First, I went on the hunt to find old filing cabinets. I was super lucky to find three at habitat for humanity right when I pulled up. They were $10 each and it was for sure meant to be.

Step 2

Next, once I got the filling cabinets home, I used my grinder to grind off the center brackets. I know many of you do not have a grinder and you can just leave the brackets as is.

Step 3

After grinding the brackets off, I lightly sanded it down with 80 grit sandpaper.

Step 4

Next, I used Rust-oleum multicolor texture spray paint around the entire filing cabinet.

Step 5

After using the texture spray, I used Rust-oleum professional high performance enamel spray black spray paint on the entire filing cabinet. This spray paint is by far my favorite for diy projects.

Step 6

Following the black spray paint, I used Rust-oleum satin clear enamel spray paint on the entire filing cabinet.

Step 7

Next, I filled the bottom of the flower boxes with home depot buckets to take up space so I did not have to use a ton of dirt. You can use whatever you have on hand. I have heard that empty milk cartons are the best for this.

Step 8

Lastly, fill with dirt and flowers that you love and enjoy!!
